I want to take a few minutes to analyse the state of our society. Let’s take the issue of women’s rights; how women are valued in our society, how women are treated, and what our society is doing to actively fight for and promote the rights of a historically oppressed and marginalised section of our society. In England, women are beaten up by their partners every day. In England, women are hospitalised by their boyfriends and husbands every day. In England, women are killed every week by the people who are supposed to love and protect them. In our society, women are objectified on television as objects for our sexual and visual pleasure and nothing more. In our media, we sell and package and advertise sex to children of younger and younger ages. What do we do to protect women in our society? Men that beat up their girlfriends, or wives; that brutally assault the women they live and sleep with, can expect, at most, a sentence of a few years. Many are released, and do exactly the same thing again.

And it was nowhere more true than in his own past. It was complicated and messy, like life. And it helped me approach my own complicated, messy relationship with women.

Yes, in Saudi Arabia women cannot drive, but men cannot elect their government, instead they are ruled over by a religiously opportunistic dynasty. In Egypt, it’s true that women were subjected to virginity tests, but men were sodomised. In Sudan women are lashed for wearing trousers, but ethnic minorities are also marginalised and under assault. We must not belittle the issues women face, or relegate them to second place, but we must place them in a wider context where wholesale reform is needed. One cannot reduce a much more universal and complicated problem merely to gender.

Now we are dreaming that we can go to the government, not just scream as we do in the street, we want to really change the situation. We are the first organisation here that is really bringing attention to women’s issues. We have many women’s organisations here in Ukraine, but they are all from political parties, and what they are doing I can only describe as sitting in an office and working for their salaries and I don’t know, writing their papers and nothing more.

Bien sûr, il y a des femmes qui sont moins fortes que les hommes. Mais il y a aussi des hommes qui sont moins forts que les femmes. Tout le monde n’a pas les mêmes capacités physiques (ni mentales). Reste à savoir si ces capacités sont réellement inférieures chez les femmes, en raison de leur sexe.

Ce qui fait la contrainte, c’est l’autorité, la domination physique, les menaces, le chantage affectif. On ne peut pas comprendre le viol si on ne comprend pas la sidération. Cette paralysie liée à la peur de mourir qui fait que, par exemple, une femme ne va pas mordre le sexe de l’homme lors d’une fellation imposée.

L’idée est que la femme acquiert du pouvoir en étant désirée par les hommes, et que grâce à cela elle parvient à rééquilibrer le rapport de force. Scott ajoute que pour ces intellectuels (elle cite Claude Habib, Mona Ozouf et Philippe Raynaud), le féminisme est vu comme «un apport étranger», en décalage avec les mœurs françaises.
