  • Between 1981 and 1983, Obama is supposed to have visited Mars twice, by way of a teleportation chamber called a “jump room.” Basiago, a fellow chrononaut, told the website Exopolitics that he saw Obama “walk back to the jump room from across the Martian terrain.” To acknowledge his comrade, Obama is said to have told Basiago, “We’re here” — apparently, “with some sense of fatalism.

  • What is revealing is the extent to which many of the these apparently disparate campaigns all seem to have connections to each other and to figures on the far right of the US Republican Party. In the case of the climate change “deniers” a significant number seem to be funded by the US oil giant ExonMobile.

  • “The Iranian government has professed on the tongue of its president Ahmadinejad that it does not believe that al Qaeda was behind 9/11 but rather, the U.S. government,” an article reads. “So we may ask the question: why would Iran ascribe to such a ridiculous belief that stands in the face of all logic and evidence?”

Though Iran was the first of the two to use the “Great Satan” as a synonym for the U.S., the author claims that Iran sees itself as a rival for al Qaeda when it comes to anti-Americanism and was jealous of the 9/11 attacks.

“To change one’s mind when presented with evidence that contradicts one’s mind, is to be scientific, logical and rational. The CIA fucked up. No-one got fired. Condi Rice lied to the commission. Bush and Cheney would not testify under oath. No-one wants to take the blame for the incompetence that killed over 3,000 people.” (via No Emotional Attachment to 9/11 Theories - The Truth is Most Important - YouTube)

  • What distinguishes many of the contemporary conspiracy theories from their predecessors is that they portrait the home government, rather than foreign enemies, as the conspiring power. Lee connects this to the fall of communism, which provided a readily available symbol of the alien other, and the post Watergate cynicism.

Lee sees the rise of conspiracy theories leading to the twin, though superficially diametrically opposed, dangers of apathy and extremism, one fed by the sense that there is no point in taking part in politics because ‘they’ control everything, the second by the belief that one’s political opponents are not just wrong or misguided, but are the incarnate forces of cosmic evil who must be opposed by all means, including violence.

  • The waxing obsession with Nibiru, which conspiracy theorists say is a planet swinging in from the outskirts of our solar system that is going to crash into Earth and wipe out humanity in 2012 — or, in some opinions, 2011 — shows that an astonishing number of people “are watching YouTube videos and visiting slick websites with nothing in their skeptical toolkit,” in the words of David Morrison, a planetary astronomer at NASA Ames Research Center and senior scientist at the NASA Astrobiology Institute. Morrison estimates that there are 2 million websites discussing the impending Nibiru-Earth collision. He receives, on average, five email inquiries about Nibiru every day.

  • And here’s the irony. In secret, with no public oversight, a group of politicians, billionaires and corporate CEOs are discussing (we’re told): Social Networks: Connectivity and Security Issues. The global policy concerning the transparency of our social life is being thrashed out in an untransparent forum by people whose “social network” includes people like Henry Kissinger and the chairman of Goldman Sachs International. It also includes people we don’t even know are there (this happens every year, names emerge that were never admitted to).

  • ‘One of [Kennedy’s] concerns was that a lot of these UFOs were being seen over the Soviet Union and he was very concerned that the Soviets might misinterpret these UFOs as U.S. aggression, believing that it was some of our technology,’ Mr Lester told AOL News. ‘I think this is one of the reasons why he wanted to get his hands on this information and get it away from the jurisdiction of NASA so he could say to the Soviets, “Look, that’s not us, we’re not doing it, we’re not being provocative. “.’
